Yahoo rounds up up-and-comers

Yahoo on Friday unveiled an ambitious initiative called Brickhouse that will probably either burnish Yahoo’s lackluster reputation for innovation – or tarnish it more.

Brickhouse, which gets its name from a previous internal Yahoo project, is a tech incubator that the search giant hopes will produce the kinds of promising new technologies it has historically been forced to buy and bring in-house, as it did with e-mail service start-up OddPost, photo-sharing site Flickr, and blog tracker MyBlogLog.

Yet unlike typical incubators that provide start-up companies with office space in exchange for an equity stake, Brickhouse, in San Francisco, will provide Yahoo employees with offices in exchange for ownership of what they produce.
