Montana among four states awarded student communications grants

Montana, Tennessee, Maryland, and Massachusetts will receive grants from the National Association of State Boards of Education to enhance communications systems between their student state board members and the peers they represent across their state.

The funding is made possible through NASBE’s Student Leadership Initiative, which is funded by MetLife Foundation to encourage leadership development among young people.

"Student members are an important voice in state board of education deliberations," said Brenda Welburn, NASBE executive director, in a statement. "But once outside the board room, student leaders often have limited opportunities to effectively communicate their opinions, insights and board decisions to other students — the very constituency most affected by a state board’s actions. We are pleased to provide financial support to these four state boards of education to improve their student communication systems."
