Top Leaders, Volunteers Sought for University of Montana Scholarships

Humanitarians-in-training take note. There is a scholarship opportunity for you or your student group right now.

Applications are now being accepted for both the Outstanding Student Leader Award and the Sentinel Service Award.

The Outstanding Student Leader Award is given to a UM student who works to make the University a better place for students to live, learn and grow. The judges of the award are looking for someone who is a leader that provides service to the University while remaining in good academic standing.

All UM students are eligible for the award but must be nominated by a member of the campus community. If chosen, the winner may receive an in-state tuition waiver for the fall 2007 semester, depending on eligibility. A student is not eligible if he or she already is receiving a fee waiver for that semester, based on University regulations.

The Sentinel Service Award is for a standout UM student group who has performed a community service benefitting someone or something in need, for the University or Missoula communities. The group who wins the award will receive $500.

To be eligible, a group must be recognized by Associated Students of UM or by the University. The service referred to on the application must have taken place within the year prior to the application deadline. The group applying must have 10 or more people, and at least eight of those members must have participated in the project. Group members must be UM students. Also, a specific group may only win the award every three years, meaning winners from the past three years are not eligible.

Applications for both awards can be picked up at The Source in the University Center or from the Center for Leadership Development and are due by noon Thursday, April 5.

Return the nomination application and statement for the Outstanding Student Leader Award to the University Center Administrative Offices, Room 232, or fax it to 243-4340. Applications for the Sentinel Service Award need to be submitted at the Center for Leadership Development, University Center Room 211, or can be faxed to 243-4340, Attn: Afton Russell.

Both awards will be given at the Outstanding Student Leadership Award Ceremony on Tuesday, April 24.
