Researchers: Medical answers might be in Berkeley Pit

The future of mental health, fighting cancer and environmental cleanup could lie in the toxic water of Berkeley Pit, and two Montana researchers believe the potential for discovery at the forlorn landmark may be enormous.

Andrea Stierle, a research professor in chemistry at Montana Tech, told a packed house Thursday night at the Montana Historical Society that she and her husband, Don, have isolated and studied more than 50 bacteria and fungi found in the pit, some of which have shown promise in treating depression, killing certain cancers and absorbing metals in toxic water.
