Free Energy- Efficient Building Seminars Offered at The University of Montana College of Technology

Three seminars this month at The University of Montana College of Technology will present information about ways to improve energy efficiency in new and existing homes and buildings.

The seminar series – “Green Building Alternatives” – is free and open to the public and will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Room HB01 of COT’s Health and Business Building, located at 909 South Ave. W. in Missoula.

Following is the seminar series schedule:

Jan. 17: Advanced and Alternative Construction Materials. Presented by Steve Loken of Loken Builders. Loken is a nationally recognized authority on recycled building technologies and the founder of the Center for Resourceful Building Technology. He will present a variety of newly developed construction materials that serve as the foundations for high-performance buildings.

Jan. 24: High Performance Building Design. Presented by homeWORD team architect Heather McMilin. This hands-on working session provides information about design considerations for new building construction that includes aspects of site selection, conservation of materials and indoor air quality.

Jan. 31: Energy Conservation and Efficiency. Presented by Dale Horton, an architect and energy consultant for the National Center for Appropriate Technology in Butte. Horton will focus on integrating architecture and engineering to develop solutions that improve energy efficiency, comfort and productivity in residential and commercial facilities.

The seminar series is funded by a Montana State Legislature appropriation and a Building Industry Labor Training Grant and sponsored in part by Carpenters’ Union Local No. 28, the Montana Contractors Association and the Bitterroot Building Association.
