Schools Boost Support For Campus Start-Ups

Spurred by the success of universities such as Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which have made millions from licensing deals and from taking equity stakes in companies, USC and other institutions around the U.S. are increasingly focused on turning university research projects into profit-making companies. Many are going beyond simply encouraging entrepreneurship among students and faculty and are setting up programs aimed at making technology-licensing deals happen — which can make money for students, faculty and universities and create broader economic benefits in society, proponents say. Such programs can also be a lure for hiring big-name faculty and attracting top-notch grad students.
