"Working with Universities to License and Launch Innovations"

Universities offer substantial opportunities to license technologies and launch spin-offs but they can also present numerous perils. Major research universities routinely license hundreds of innovations and may spin off 10-20 enterprises each year. But venture capitalists and others interested in working with universities need to know how to navigate the system and overcome roadblocks presented by those academic systems.

For example, the best starting point is usually to identify and establish relationships with key researchers rather than short-cutting the process by turning to technology databases, many of which are not current. Other “rules of the road” are now available to help avoid pitfalls and profit from valuable university innovations.
