Meridian plans free Wi-Fi zone. Downtown wireless Internet program starting this week may be the first to be offered by an Idaho city

The city of Meridian will become one of the first Idaho municipality to provide free Wi-Fi when it debuts a yearlong wireless Internet pilot program this week.

The Meridian Development Corp., the city’s urban renewal agency, contracted with Meridian business Unwired City to bring Wi-Fi to downtown along Main Street between State Street and the railroad tracks, extending for one block east and west of Main.

The Internet signal will be accessible at outdoor locations, but local businesses may purchase equipment to extend the signal, said Matthew Wheeler, president of Unwired City. The company provides network operations and support for hotels and businesses.
