Steve Corning: A developer with an eye on national trends

If not for an armed robber, Steve Corning might not have returned to his hometown.

Corning, 53, was born in Billings, attended Senior High and graduated from Harvard University in 1976 with a degree in government. After his fleeting thoughts of getting involved in politics evaporated, he went out to Hollywood in hopes of making it as a producer.

He had some friends in the business and things looked promising, but he spent three years in California without getting any big breaks. He was already thinking of going home when he was robbed at gunpoint in his Hollywood Hills home. The intruder stuck a gun under his chin, tied him up and put him in a closet while he ransacked the house.

"That sort of sense of the community has eroded enormously in recent years," he said, pointing to the defeat of school mill levies and other community-improvement initiatives. More than anything, Corning said, Billings needs to maintain a good school system.

"We need to speak about it directly," he said. "The cost of not educating people is profound."
