More elk exist today in North America than any time since the turn of the 19th century. In 1910, it was estimated that fewer than 50,000 elk existed in North America (Thomas and Lyon 1987). In the past, elk were a common sight on the prairies of eastern Montana. Today, following years of improved game management and transplantation, elk have begun to fill much of their former habitat.
