News has downtown Seattle on edge. Athletes compete. Companies compete. Newspapers compete. So do downtowns.

They compete with other downtowns, with ring cities and the suburbs. They compete for investment, shoppers, corporate headquarters, residents and tourists.

And more than a few times, they lose.

They lose because those making the decision to shop, invest, live, visit or locate their company decide that not going downtown, or going to someone else’s downtown, makes more sense for cost, and convenience.
