Main Street Montana Fall Edition Highlights Silver Bow County

"Tap ‘er light, grab a pint and see what The Daily Show
Missed," reads the fall 2006 headline of Main Street Montana; a
publication produced by the Montana Department of Labor and Industry in
partnership with the Montana Department of Commerce and the Governor’s
Office of Economic Development.

The opening statement from Butte resident and Chief Business Officer
Evan Barrett rests below a 1939 Consumers Oil photo, when gas was 18
cents per gallon, which according to Barrett, "Discloses an opportunity
for many areas in Montana where, at a time of $75 a barrel oil and $3 a
gallon gas, energy development is a target for good jobs and growth."

Butte, America where the ethnic diversity of the melting pot meant the
safety instructions in the mines had to be written in 16 languages;
where 24 hours a day men drove miles deep to bring up the minerals
needed for our growing nation.

Each edition of the Main Street provides insightful tools from the
various divisions within the Department of Labor and Industry,
Department of Commerce and the Governor’s Office of Economic
Opportunity to assist over 35,000 Montana employers in maximizing their
business potential.

"While the private sector drives our economic engine, at times
there are small gaps in funding and critical infrastructure that
government must address to ensure businesses continue to come to
Montana, and then expand once they see what our workforce can produce,"
said Commerce Director Tony Preite.

Main Street Montana magazine strives to highlight these public/private
partnerships as part of the important economic growth in Montana.

"The Main Street provides us the vehicle to showcase Montana’s
resiliency and the heart of Montana’s workforce," said Labor
Commissioner Keith Kelly. "No government program should stand alone,
but rather work together to ensure we have the best trained workers and
state of the art infrastructure to ensure Montana can compete in the
global economy."

Montana unemployment rate falls

The state unemployment rate fell in August and remains lower than the national rate, the Montana Department of Labor and Industry said Wednesday.

The August seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.5 percent, down from 3.8 percent a month earlier. The national, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, down from 4.8 percent in July.

There was a decrease of 200 jobs between July and August that the department attributed to school districts not yet rehiring much of their staff for the fall.
