UC Davis gets $25 million for biofuel research from Chevron

Fuel made from wood chips, orange rinds and switchgrass could be powering California cars in years to come thanks to a $25 million grant from Chevron Corp. to the University of California, Davis.

Chevron Technology Ventures LLC, a unit of San Ramon-based Chevron, said Tuesday it pledged the money over the next five years for research on biofuels at UC Davis. The project is a joint research effort with the California Biomass Collaborative.

The research could lead to the use of farm and forest vegetation as well as urban waste as transportation fuel. Crops may be harvested for fuel as well.
