At the start of the 20th century, oil sucked from the ground in Pennsylvania, Texas and California spawned some of this country’s greatest fortunes and powered its rise to unprecedented industrial might.

Now, well into a new century, investors are seeking an alternative as the price and environmental costs of "black gold" become too dear. And they’re putting a lot of money into the quest for a new and cleaner energy source. Right now, the clean-technology sector includes the development of new fuels for cars and trucks, as well as wind, solar and other alternative methods for generating electricity.
