Fledgling winemakers try to sink roots in Wyoming. Producers rely on trial and error, cooperative spirit

On the family farm in Huntley, Wyo., Patrick Zimmerer and his family used to grow the basics: corn, hay and sugar beets.

But in 2001 the University of Wyoming graduate brought his knowledge and energy home after writing a senior thesis on growing grapes and turned a section of the acreage into a vineyard.

"We got started just looking into the value-added crops in agriculture," Zimmerer said.

Agriculture is changing, he added, and many people who want to be involved in it don’t have the acreage needed to turn a profit in corn or hay, he said.
