Talk to candidates about higher ed, chancellor urges

Montana State University-Billings Chancellor Ron Sexton asked faculty and staff members to stress the importance of higher education when visiting with candidates for the 2007 Montana Legislature.

During Thursday’s annual state-of-the-university address, Sexton strongly urged university employees to talk to candidates in the months running up to the November election.

Tuition on public campuses across the state has increased almost 50 percent in the past five years. With per capita income not keeping pace, higher education quickly has become unaffordable for some Montana families, he said.

An anticipated decline in the number of Montana high school graduates because of changing demographics also will put financial pressure on campuses.
