New McLaughlin scientist focuses on Parkinson’s

McLaughlin Research Institute http://www.montana.edu/wwwmri/ in Great Falls Tuesday introduced its newest scientist, Deborah E. Cabin, who is probing the causes of Parkinson’s disease.

Cabin had been a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health’s National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Md., before taking the post in Great Falls. She holds a doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Maryland.

Stanford University Professor Irving Weissman said Cabin is among the "top one or two people" in the field of using mice models to investigate Parkinson’s disease. The disease, which actor Michael J. Fox and boxing great Muhammad Ali suffer from, can cause tremors, stiffness, impaired balance and loss of coordination.

"We’re very fortunate in finding an excellent mouse geneticist," said George Carlson, senior scientist at the institute.
