Community involvement urged at Billings Conference. "Volunteering as well as education strengthens a community."

Americans are more likely now than in the past to pack up and leave a community if they sense it’s declining.

That’s all the more reason for local residents to invest in their community with their time and money, according to Chris "Shoots" Veis, a Billings city councilman and engineer with the state Department of Environmental Quality.

The failure of six Billings school levies in recent years sends a message to highly mobile residents who can move anywhere if they think a community is eroding, he said.

Veis was one of five panelists discussing Montana State University-Billings’ role in the community during Tuesday’s back-to-school conference for faculty and staff.
