Business Schools help students do well doing good

Doing good is no longer good enough.

Donors are becoming more sophisticated and globally aware, demanding higher results and increased accountability. Accounting rules governing the country’s more than 1 million nonprofits have become more stringent — not to mention complex — and good governance along with technological expertise are now cornerstones of every successful operation.

Add increased competition for funds — some 60,000 nonprofit groups form each year — and you’ll see why the once warm and fuzzy world of helping others is now a cutthroat business like any other.

It’s not surprising that observers say the number of nonprofit leaders who have completed advanced course work or their M.B.A.s is on the rise, though no data exists on exact numbers.
