Suiting up for science. Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton

If you’re a scientist at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton hoping to work in the new biosafety level 4 suite of laboratories, be prepared to build up your bladder strength.

“You don’t rush into a BSL4 lab,” Nancy Hoe, biosafety officer at RML, said Wednesday as she explained the complex process that scientists will follow entering and leaving the labs which are nearing completion.

“It takes about 25 to 30 minutes,” she said, noting scientists will then usually do anywhere from two to four hours of research in their biocontainment suits, also known as positive pressure suits.

Upon entering the facility, scientists will perform a “daily check” – checking the air pressure system, air filtering system, and other systems. They will then enter a hallway which leads to an outer change room.
