Less-expensive notebooks perfect for students’ needs

Here’s my back-to-school PC buying philosophy for 2006, in just four words:

Less really is more.

Personal computers have become so powerful, and component costs have fallen so low, that even the least-expensive desktops and notebooks are more than adequate for what most students need.

Note the emphasis on the word “need.” Adolescents may desperately want the latest top-of-the-line processor and graphics card for playing games, or editing their YouTube videos. But plain vanilla PCs are good enough for schoolwork.

Decently equipped Windows notebooks are widely available this season at $500 to $700, as are Windows desktop packages of computer, monitor and printer. If you keep your eyes peeled for the occasional deep discount, you can find respectable PCs for $400.
