MSU-B pulls in grants for Indian education

Montana State University-Billings will receive $293,290 in federal funds to recruit and train American Indian teachers and school administrators, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said Thursday.

The money is for the first year of a four-year grant, said Marsha Sampson, interim director of the Montana Center on Disabilities at MSU-Billings.

One of the center’s programs is the Big Horn Teacher Projects, which is in charge of training new American Indian teachers under the grant.

The MSU-Billings program received two similar grants in 2001 and 2005 that have enabled several Indian students to graduate with teaching degrees.
