Substitute grandparents. Seniors lend a hand at local schools; give kids one-on-one reading time

Though his friends and family know him as Clete Gerig, students and surprisingly most adults at Washington Elementary School simply know him as “Papa.”

And that doesn’t bother this personable senior citizen one bit.

“I don’t tell them nothing,” Gerig said with a sly laugh Thursday.

The 76-year-old grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of two is in his fifth year in the Foster Grandparent Program – a national program that matches senior citizens with children in varied settings such as schools, Head Start centers, correctional institutions, and teen-pregnancy programs.
