Ravalli County, Montana unveils new 3-D GIS computer program

County residents can now get a three-dimensional bird’s-eye view of the Bitterroot Valley with just the click of a button.

Last week county geographical-information-survey personnel unveiled a new computer program the public can to use to view a wide array of information.

Using Google Earth, the program taps into county data overlaid on geographic information allowing users to scroll over the land overlaid with data. The cadastral maps include structures per square mile, Ravalli County conservation easements, voluntary zoning, federal lands and voting precincts.

The program is so precise that a person can zoom in close enough that they can see their car, officials said.

Google Earth is free – but the program requires a good computer, GIS officials said.

Officials also displayed new features within the county’s internal land information systems program.

The application tool now provides geo-codes – name, address, number of home owners and the location with GIS pinpoints. Officials can look up neighboring land owners and view parcels of land. Aerial photo with parcels, flood-plain information and various data can be overlaid.
