Idaho community college plan could cost Idaho State University millions

A proposal to expand community colleges in Idaho could mean millions in lost income to Idaho State University, new President Arthur Vailas said Tuesday in his first address to state lawmakers.

On the campus of Eastern Idaho Technical College in Idaho Falls, Vailas told members of the state’s Interim Committee on Community Colleges ISU takes in $5 million annually in tuition from students enrolled in entry level and professional technical courses.

If the state builds new community colleges or expands existing technical colleges such as EITC into community colleges as proposed, Vailas asked the committee to hold ISU harmless by allocating funds for a few years to offset declining enrollment.
