Server Farms Live Off Open Source. "Whenever you go to Google, you’re using Linux,"

To the many oft-sung virtues of open-source software you can add this: it saves electricity.

Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist.com, said the business has been getting complaints from its server collocation company for generating "too many page views per kilowatt hour." The free classified-ad site grinds out about 150,000 pages for the juice consumed by ten 100-watt light bulbs in 60 minutes.

With a bare-bones staff of 22, Craigslist epitomizes massive success on low-budget infrastructure. Its network of 140-some servers publishes more than 10 million user-generated postings a month, and the site is ranked among the ten most-visited English language websites. Buckmaster said open-source software is a key part of what makes that work.
