Report Says Improving Rural Education More Than Books & Mortar

The Rural Sociological Society brief, Improving Rural Education Attainment, compares historical education attainment rates in rural and urban areas and examines the characteristics that influence student achievement.
Rural communities traditionally lagged behind urban areas in per capita income and education attainment rates, but these gaps began to narrow during the 1990’s. To continue to improve rural educational outcomes the authors recommend increasing positive family engagement with the schools and social capital, the main factor affecting student achievement.
