Middle school students can learn to be an engineer at LEAP Camp

Room is still available for middle school students from 24 eligible communities wishing to enroll in the Learning Engineering by Application (LEAP) Camp, July 30 – August 4 on the campus of Montana State University.

Building Lego robots, designing their own Web pages, building bridges and going on field trips are just a few of the activities students will participate in while at camp.

The camp is designed to give students hands-on activities that apply math and science as well as demonstrating what engineers do and how their work applies to everything from building an ipod to a bridge or finding new ways to deal with pollution or deal with medical problems.

The camp includes activities to build self-confidence and prepare students for college.

The cost of the camp, food and housing are all provided free to eligible students.

The camp is only available to students attending a GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) school. Montana communities with GEAR UP program schools are: Arlee, Box Elder, Browning, Charlo, Dixon, Dodson, Dutton/Brady, Kalispell, Hardin, Harlem, Hays, Heart Butte, Lame Deer, Lincoln, Lodge Grass, Marion, Nashua, Pryor, Rocky Boy, St. Ignatius, St. Regis, Trout Creek, Vaughn and Winnett.

LEAP Camp application materials can be obtained by calling Sheree Watson at (406)-994-6723 or emailing her at [email protected]. Enrollment is open until the camp is full.
