Building in climate problems in U.S. Homes, offices responsible for most energy consumption

Sport utility vehicles confined most unsportingly to suburban streets have become the poster children for America’s energy-consumption excess. But it’s the suburban homes lining those streets and the millions of other buildings where we live, work and play that are the biggest energy hogs.

The U.S. Department of Energy says roughly 40 percent of the greenhouse gases the country emits are from buildings. Transportation and industry comprise about 30 percent each.

Buildings consume 72 percent of all electricity and 54 percent of the natural gas, the Department of Energy says. Considering the role of renewable energy and green building in improving the state of our housing stock has been a major theme at the Solar 2006 national solar-energy conference in Denver.
