Santa Feans Take Ride on the Future Transit Light Rail Link to Albuquerque

Santa Fe City Councilor Ronald Trujillo got a firsthand experience in commuting on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express on Tuesday.

Trujillo, along with about 150 city, county and state officials, got to feel what it is like to ride from Lamy to Bernalillo on the new commuter train. The operation of the Rail Runner between Bernalillo and Albuquerque is scheduled to begin Friday, although service to Santa Fe isn’t slated to begin until 2008.

Trujillo— who took his children Kristianna, 4, and Hunter, 5, along for the ride— was putting together cardboard train models that were given to business leaders and others in the community who were invited to take part in the event.

"It’s a great day for New Mexico and the city of Santa Fe," Trujillo said, taking a look out the window as his kids moved their models back and forth. "My children here are having a blast. They’re getting to see parts of Lamy and areas that they haven’t seen in the past. I’ve never ridden the train from Lamy to Santa Fe, so I’m getting to see a part of New Mexico that I’ve never seen before."
