A home of their own. Five families move into Rural Development homes in Lewistown, MT

After long months of working in the scorching sun and freezing cold, five local families realized the American dream. They were handed the keys to the homes they had built with their bare hands at Casino Creek Highlands, during a special welcome home party and honor ceremony on June 29.

“These families had to work hard and have volunteers who would help with the building,” said District 6 Human Resource and Development Council Housing Director Esther Distad, at the ceremony. “They were also working full-time jobs. They are very tired, but very excited today. They have accomplished quite a feat. It is beautiful what these families have accomplished.”

The new idea in home ownership surfaced in Lewistown just two and a half years ago. The City of Lewistown Housing Committee had heard about a Rural Development project in Kalispell that turned out to be a huge success, putting low to moderate-income families in their own homes and benefiting the local economy.
