Growth Through Agriculture program A real bison booster boost

Plenty of restaurants and resorts want to offer fresh bison dishes on their menus. But convincing conventional banks to loan money to a business that supplies the meat is tough.

So when the owners of Montana Mountain Bison wanted to buy a refrigerated trailer to haul their product, they applied for funds through the Growth Through Agriculture program.

Cory and Beckie Marquis now have a $24,800 loan. Another $3,500 grant will pay for a new Web site capable of taking online orders. Their business is one of eight awarded about $333,500 in grants and loans recently.

Growth Through Agriculture is a Montana Department of Agriculture program and receives about $1.25 million annually from the state’s general fund.
