Chancellor stresses flexibility in teaching. Links to Business Groups and Board Memberships Seen as Key in Nurturing Future Workforce

As chancellor of one of the Bay Area’s largest community college systems, Martha Kanter likes to say she works for everyone because her students and graduates are working everywhere.

Perhaps that’s why the leader of Foothill-De Anza Community College District sits on nearly a dozen boards of local business and civic organizations, including the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

“I really see community relations as part of building partnerships so we can get internships and workforce opportunities for students,” Kanter explained.

The district, which includes Foothill and De Anza colleges and has more than 44,000 students, is the first educational stepping stone for about 20 percent of the area’s graduating high school seniors, Kanter said.
