Criminal charges possible in University of Montana INSA space program inquiry

Missoula County Attorney Fred Van Valkenberg will determine whether state criminal theft charges should be filed against two former University of Montana officials and a former UM employee for potential conflicts of interest and nepotism violations.

Van Valkenberg was handed the case of UM’s beleaguered NASA-funded space research programs in a letter from John Connor, chief criminal counsel for the state attorney general’s office.

Connor’s letter gave Van Valkenberg responsibility to take “whatever action he deems appropriate,” and stated such violations are within the jurisdiction of the county attorney serving in the affected jurisdiction.
