Key Oregon open source firm moving to California. Software – Compiere Inc. is heading to Silicon Valley with $6 million in venture capital it managed to attract

One of Oregon’s best-known open source software companies has landed $6 million in venture capital, but is moving to California to spend it.

Compiere Inc., which came to Portland last year to tap into the region’s cluster of open source development, plans to announce today that it will relocate to a still-to-be determined site in the Silicon Valley. The move puts the company closer to its new venture backers, New Enterprise Associates, and to a pool of potential employees with experience in the kind of business software Compiere makes.

Though Compiere employs just 10 people worldwide, and only three in Portland, the company is highly visible within the open source community. Its departure represents a setback as Oregon tries to turn the state’s open source activity from a cultural phenomenon into an economic one.
