New incentive for college prep
The Hathaway Scholarship will go beyond giving students the opportunity to attend college, educators say. It will accomplish what counselors and parents sometimes can’t: entice students into taking the challenging high school classes they need to be prepared for college and work.
Currently more than a quarter of students entering the University of Wyoming need to take at least one remedial class to bring their skills up to speed, said Jim McBride, state superintendent of public schools.
Students who aren’t prepared for college are less likely to graduate, educators say. While the statistics are improving, just over half of University of Wyoming students graduate in six years, and less than a third of community college students earn a two-year degree in three years.
