35 Montana communities vie for windpower projects

Montana towns and counties graced by reasonably steady winds became targets this spring for serious community-scale windpower entrepreneurs.

Targets in a good sense, because these entrepreneurs have been drumming up interest among local governments to apply for interest-free federal financing for wind energy projects.

Thirty-five local governments ended up submitting applications (prior to the April 26 deadline) for a total of $37.2 million in Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (or CREBs). It is not likely that all these projects will get funded, but if they did – and figuring roughly a million dollars per megawatt – this could add nearly 40 megawatts of dispersed windpower around the state, all of it east of the Rockies.
