Venture firms itching to spend Seattle a hotbed of new wireless ideas

A number of factors are leading venture capitalists to pump more money into startup companies: an improved economy, greater broadband penetration and new Internet and wireless applications that make it easy for people to share digital photos, videos and text.

But one simple explanation often gets overlooked.

Venture capitalists are sitting on piles of newly raised cash, known in industry lingo as "dry powder." In the first quarter alone, venture capitalists raised $6.5 billion — a 21 percent increase over the same period last year. And a new report out Monday showed that they’re not shy to invest it.
