Idaho hopes to hit silver screen. New law gives 5 percent tax rebate to production companies for hiring locals

Idaho is famous for its potatoes, but the scenery and small-town atmosphere of North Idaho’s cities could create even more fame and fortune.

Last month Gov. Dirk Kempthorne signed legislation approving a 5 percent sales tax rebate that backers say will encourage the production of more film and television projects in Idaho.

House Bill 497 provides a rebate to film and television companies that hire Idaho residents for jobs that pay at least $11 per hour but not more than $125 per hour. To qualify, a production company must make a minimum investment in Idaho of $200,000 or more over a three-year period.
