Livingston business leaders asking residents to buy mercantile shares

Livingston business leaders are asking residents to invest in a community-owned general merchandise store so people can buy clothing without a trip to Bozeman.

"We want the community to invest in the community," said Sharon Walker, secretary of the Livingston Mercantile’s board of directors. "We want people to feel it’s their store."

Shares will be sold for $500. Organizers want to sell $400,000 worth of shares. No one can invest more than $10,000.

Walker said investors may some day see a dividend, but the board is asking people to look at the mercantile as a community service.
