Packin’ in the business, "Boulder Creek Packs"

Ask Bitterrooters about some of the biggest natural problems in the valley over the past five years, and they’ll probably list spotted knapweed, drought and forest fires in their top 10.

They’re widely discussed because they’re bad for business.

Ranchers hate knapweed because their stock won’t eat it and it’s choking out the native grasses. Farmers hate drought because it seems that the only plant that can survive without water is knapweed. And tourists will gladly spend their expendable income in places that aren’t shrouded with smoke.

The bottom line for many farmers, ranchers and business owners suffered over the past five years because of these scourges, but not Nancy Joy Hendrickson. She manufactures backpacks for firefighters.

Now she hates fires as much as the next person, but her business has benefited because each Boulder Creek Packs http://www.bouldercreekpacks.com/ backpack on the back of a firefighter is free advertising.

And there have been plenty of opportunities to advertise.

Starting out, more than 20 years ago, Hendrickson said most of her advertising came from word of mouth. She’d make packs for local firefighters, and they’d spread the word while fighting fires.

Then came the Internet.
