Someone is trying to eliminate the SBIR program!!

SBTC Action Alert

Here we go again! Someone is trying to eliminate the SBIR program!! The American Enterprise Institute just published a paper recommending elimination of the SBIR program and all other tax, procurement and regulatory benefits for small business. This paper has already been discussed in Forbes and Business Week magazines. The report’s author, Veronique de Rugy, is scheduled to testify before the Government Affairs subcommittee, chaired by Sen. Tom Colburn (R-Okla.), at 2:30 on Thursday, April 6.

The Small Business Technology Council is contacting you hoping that you will immediately contact Colburn and other members of the subcommittee (see list below) and let them know how important the SBIR program is to your company and to your state. We would also urge you to submit written testimony to him for inclusion in the hearing record. The testimony doesn’t need to be long or complicated or in any specific format. Your testimony should include how important SBIR is to your company and state. Include the number of jobs you and the SBIR program have created and something short about one or two of your SBIR technologies. The testimony should be emailed to [email protected] If you live in one of the states of the other Committee members, you should also contact them through their websites and let them know SBIR is important. This AEI paper is wrong on small business job creation! Send them a copy of your testimony and try to see them and talk to them about SBIR.

Remember, Reauthorization is just around the corner.

The AEI paper can be found at http://www.nsba.biz/docs/aei_small_business_report.pdf. I’m directing your attention to page 9 Section 2.5, which discusses the SBIR program and the paper’s abstract which recommends eliminating all programs that benefit small business. The paper devotes more time to SBIR than any other program for small business.

Please send us blind copies of your communications to Colburn and his staff.
