Family business has been creating, restoring, selling classic wood boats for three generations

If you have to ask the price, that’s fine. With starting prices close to six figures, Syd Young knows the Stan-Craft boats http://www.stancraftboats.com he designs and builds in his new $1.5 million shop aren’t for everybody, but the well-heeled buyers didn’t get that way by throwing their money around carelessly.

"We deal with people who are pretty realistic," he said.

And not that many of them, with production of the classic wood boats at only about eight per year, plus limited restoration of the boats his father and their namesake, Stan, began building since 1933. Young, wife Julie and a crew of 14 put 800 to 3,000 hours into hand-building the sleek, glossy boats from African mahogany shipped in from Ghana.
