Wyoming coal considered for gasification

General Electric is eyeing coal from the Powder River Basin for gasification — a process that compresses coal and extracts gas that can be burned much more cleanly than by burning the coal itself.

Although GE Energy Gasification, one of the world’s leading makers of coal gasification units, isn’t planning to build a gasification plant in Wyoming, talk of using Wyoming coal is a step in that direction.

To that end, lawmakers are considering a bill that would provide up to $62.4 million in sales and use tax relief for coal derivative processes. The measure is headed to the Senate after getting committee approval.
