Study shows which states have business-friendly tax codes and which don’t, how does yours fare?

Wyoming tops the list of states with the most business-friendly tax system, according to a report released Monday.

South Dakota, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Texas, Delaware, Montana and Oregon round out the top 10, according to the Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index.

Businesses face the least hospitable business tax climate in New York, followed by New Jersey, Rhode Island, Ohio, Vermont, Maine, Kentucky, Nebraska, Iowa and Arkansas.

The Tax Foundation’s index rewarded states with more neutral tax codes that have low, flat tax rates that apply to all businesses.

Study finds Idaho taxes not so business-friendly

Business climate ranked 24th nationally and far behind neighboring states. But state leaders say index overlooks quality of life, low cost of doing business.

Idaho’s reputation as a business-friendly state took a beating Monday in a study that examined the taxes states impose on businesses.

The 2006 State Business Tax Climate Index prepared by the Tax Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-base research group, ranked Idaho 24th in the nation in terms of the business taxes it collects.

According to the Tax Foundation study, the top states in the 2006 index were the ones that did without at least one of the three top taxes collected by states — corporate, individual and sales tax.
