11 Utah firms are top manufacturers

Extension partnership hands out 2005 awards at Capitol

Eleven Utah companies have been named winners of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership’s 2005 Manufacturer of the Year Awards.

The announcement of the winners was made Thursday evening at the Capitol complex.

The Manufacturer of the Year is Coverstar Inc. of Lindon. The company produces automatic pool covers.

The Major Manufacturer of the Year is Communication Systems-West of Salt Lake City. A division of L-3 Communications Holdings, CSW produces systems for intelligence collection, imagery processing and satellite communications for the defense industry.

Swimming pool cover maker named Utah’s top manufacturer

When Lanny Smith moved his manufacturing business from California to Utah, he enjoyed affordable real estate, talented labor and lower taxes. Thursday he reaped another benefit: recognition.

Coverstar Inc. was named Utah’s Manufacturer of the Year by Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development at an awards dinner in the state Capitol.

The Lindon-based company, which was selected because if its size and growth, produces automatic swimming pool covers that are distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Coverstar Inc. now controls about 40 percent of the market, Smith said.
