Montana Nonprofit Association Appoints 15 Leaders to Public Policy Council

The Montana Nonprofit Association (MNA) http://www.mtnonprofit.org announced today the appointment of 15 nonprofit
and civic leaders from around the state to MNA’s newly established Public Policy Council http://www.matr.net/files/PublicPolicyCouncilwebroster.pdf

The MNA Board of Director’s established the Public Policy Council to
provide advice and direction to the MNA Board regarding public policy issues of critical
importance to Montana’s nonprofit sector.

Joy McGrath, MNA’s Board Chair, commented “Our membership has indicated that public
policy work is one of the most important priorities for MNA. Establishing the Public Policy
Council is a very important step towards building a voice for our membership and Montana’s
nonprofit sector in the public policy arena.”

The goals of MNA’s public policy program are:

(1) To create a voice for MNA members on public policy issues.

(2) To educate nonprofit organizations and legislators regarding the public policy issues which
affect the nonprofit sector as a whole, their rights and responsibilities as advocates, and the
skills needed to engage effectively in advocacy.

(3) To build a representative body of nonprofit organizations in which diverse points of view are
represented and engaged in public policy debates on issues that affect the sector as a whole.

(4) To enable the MNA membership to weigh in on significant national policy issues through
federal lobbying and participation with the policy activities of the National Council of
Nonprofit Associations.

“Accountability measures, charitable giving incentives, nonprofit advocacy rights, workforce
development issues, and government contracting are only a few of the many areas that the
Council will consider,” said Brian Magee, MNA’s Executive Director. “Our plan is to announce
a long-term agenda by the 2007 Montana Legislative Session and engage our membership and
policymakers in advancing that agenda going forward.”

In the coming weeks, the Council will be surveying the MNA membership to begin to identify
policy issues of importance and develop plans for broader nonprofit advocacy efforts including
publication of an updated Montana Nonprofit Sector Report and hosting a first ever Nonprofit
Day at the 2007 Montana Legislative Session.

Founded in 2001, MNA is a membership organization of 501(c)(3) nonprofits that promotes a
stronger nonprofit sector, a supportive public climate, and the ability of nonprofits to accomplish
their missions. Representing the richness and diversity of Montana’s charitable sector, MNA’s
280+ nonprofit members address a broad array of missions, come from all four corners of the
state, and range in size from the largest organizations to the smallest unstaffed nonprofits. MNA
achieves its mission through public policy, affordable goods and services, training and technical
assistance, research, education, and communications. For more information on MNA programs
