Tom’s of Maine to buy power from Neb. wind farm

Tom’s of Maine, the Sanford maker of natural toothpaste and personal care products, has arranged to buy the equivalent of all the electricity used by its manufacturing and shipping building from a Nebraska wind farm.

Through a deal brokered by Constellation Energy Group’s Constellation NewEnergy and the nonprofit group Clean Air-Cool Planet, Tom’s this week began paying the Ainsworth Wind Energy Facility for 130,000 kilowatt hours per month of electricity, which is fed into the national power grid. Financial terms were not disclosed. The 100,000-square-foot Sanford building uses the equivalent power of 260 average-size homes.
