MSU researchers consider soldiers, citizens, sand flies and risk

A thousand U.S. soldiers in Iraq have come down with leishmaniasis, a disease transmitted by the bites of sand flies that can leave disfiguring scars or, in rare cases, attack the eyes, liver or spleen.
Though there are insect repellents and pesticides that keep sand flies away, some soldiers worry about whether the chemicals are safe.
Which carries the greater danger, leishmaniasis or pesticides and repellents?
