Rocky Mountain Laboratories scientists in Hamilton, Montana make advances in chlamydia research

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease announced Tuesday that scientists at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton http://www.niaid.nih.gov/dir/infobsl4/info.htm have made recent advances in chlamydia research.

In a press release, the institute said that, 30 years after first identifying a protein of the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, scientists from NAID have characterized it and conducted laboratory studies demonstrating that it is a major target of the immune system.

The study was conducted by Harlan D. Caldwell and was published this week in “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” The research still requires confirmation in animal models but could potentially lead to an immune-based treatment against all 15 varieties of C. trachomatis, the press release said.
